Here Comes the Sun – How to Take Great Summer Photos! – Amy Kelley

It’s summertime and your social calendar is full.  You’ve booked your vacation, you’ve been invited to at least a dozen barbecues and you have your swim suit at the ready.  But there is still one problem:  Your photos from last summer were a big belly flop!  They were either too bright or too dark, or just plain out of focus.  You think it’s impossible for you to take a good picture in the bright summer sun.  Well, think again.  While it is true that the summer sunlight can be very intense, if you follow these simple steps, you can take great summer photos that will be the envy of all your friends.

Take Cover!

Let’s face it, the sun can be unsympathetic to your photography needs.  Don’t let that deter you though.  Instead, take a step back and take a good look at your surroundings.  Find a shady area, like under a tree or near the side of a building; or if you are at the pool or the beach, try under a beach umbrella, or life guard chair, or maybe some sand dunes. Anyplace there is shade.  Be creative and have fun with it.

Stay away from the light!

It may not have been good advice for Carol Anne in Poltergeist, but it is good advice for you.  If shade can’t be found, make sure the subject of your photo is placed in front of the sun.  By doing this, you can block out most of the sun’s rays, while still letting some light leak through.  You can also play with your angles on this one to take photos that really pop!

Apply Your Sunblock!

So what about those candid moments that you just don’t want to miss, but fear the bright sun will erase forever?  Don’t fret!  You can create a filter using your sunglasses! Simply hold your lens directly in front of your camera and take a photo. You can have fun with this one too, by holding the glasses at different angles to see where the effect is strongest.

Timing is Everything!

The two best times of day to take amazing photos are one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset. It is at these times when the sun is low in the sky that help to produce a soft, diffused light which is much more flattering the strong rays of the midday sun.

Everyone at Newton Design & Marketing wishes everyone a happy safe summer!

Newton Launches Their Newly Redesigned Website!

The Newton Design & Marketing team is pleased to announce the launch of their newly redesigned website. Newton Design & Marketing is an award winning advertising and marketing firm located in The Woodlands, TX. Their new website offers a fresh new look with cutting edge design.

Heading up the re-design was Newton’s Aesthetic Visionary, Denee Lewis. “It is great being involved with the launch of our new website. Our clients are part of our family and we wanted to ensure there was no interruption in service to them, so our site was born within a couple of week’s time! With the new site, visitors will immediately be immersed in our work and recognize that we are a full service, creative, digital communications agency ready to work on their next project or handle all their marketing needs. The team profile gives visitors a glimpse into the team, who we are, what motivates us. If you go by the saying “Seeing is Believing”, all you will have to do is peruse our portfolio, services and blog to see what we can do.”

Some of the sites other new features include a full width slider showcasing selected work and communicating what we are about, home page previews of portfolio pieces, a team profile section, testimonials and news and a categorized portfolio.

“We are very excited to finally be launching our new website,” said Tanya Jacobson, Co-Founder and Creative Genius for Newton. “It has really been a long time coming. We definitely fit the old saying of “the Cobbler’s children have no shoes. It can be difficult for a design firm to take the time away from their client workload and work on their own company’s marketing.”

Newton is the most award winning agency in Northern Houston. Most Recently, Newton was awarded 5 Hermes Creative Awards and 5 silver Communicator Awards. Newton continues to do award winning work in and around The Woodlands and is now located in Dallas/Fort Worth and Denver, too.
