How to Slow Down in a Fast-Paced World and Still be Productive

By Amy Kelley

TakeaBreakYou’re sitting at your desk, new assignment in hand to update the company blog. “Hmmm”, you tell yourself, “That sounds easy enough. In fact, it actually sounds relaxing and will be a nice change of pace”. That is until you sit down to the blank screen and realize you have no idea what to write about.

The above example is not uncommon. In today’s fast-paced, crazy, technology–ridden world, it is a wonder we can truly accomplish anything. With our cell phones, televisions, GPS, satellite radio, internet, podcasts, Fitbits and more, do we ever have time to just sit and process our thoughts and experiences or are our minds so full of white noise that from the moment we wake in the morning until our heads hit the pillow, we are in a state of constant overload? If you’re like me, it is the latter. But not to worry, because there is hope for people like us. We just need to follow these simple few steps, and we can be well on your way to accomplishing more than just the company blog.

Turn off the World
This step is simple. Every day for at least 10-15 minutes, shut off your cell phones, computers, televisions, etc. Take a break from friends, co-workers, family…even your dog. Whatever is a distraction or “white noise” in your life needs to be removed for this brief period so you can just relax and allow your mind and body to catch up with all that you have taken in. So whether you take a quiet walk or just sit back and relax, do it in a peaceful, quiet setting. You’ll feel refreshed and ready to take on the next task that comes your way.

Process your thoughts
If you take time to do this every day, you will be surprised at the things your brain will give back to you. Things you have not thought about in years will suddenly be at the forefront of your mind. Given enough quality time with your thoughts, you may even come up with the answer to world peace…just kidding! But you may come up with a great topic for the company blog, or the answer to a problem at work or at home. At the very least, you will have a much clearer head.

Write it down
WriteitDownHow many times have you had an amazing dream, but within the first few minutes of waking up, you start to forget it? Or, you have a great idea in the shower or on your drive to work, but when you go to tell someone, you can’t remember what it was? I have even walked into a store and stood there trying to remember why I wanted to go there in the first place. This is because we are constantly feeling rushed or just inundated with so much data that we have no semblance of order in our minds. This is why we should write down anything that seems significant to us the moment we think of it. We may look back at it later and decide it was not really a good idea after all, or we may just find that it was exactly what was needed. Either way, it gets out of your already cluttered head and in a place where it won’t get lost in the abundance of thoughts in your mind.

If you practice these simple steps for a few minutes each day, not only will you feel less besieged, but your head will be clear, your mind will be alert and you will be ready to handle whatever task is placed before you. Your friends, coworkers, and family …even your dog will thank you!
