We judge people on how they speak and don’t even try to deny it. If they use slang, if they have an accent, if they use the wrong words, it all amounts to losing credibility. So why is it that the way we communicate on the internet does not reflect the expectations we have on others in real life? People use laziness and the fact that everyone is doing it as an excuse. Here’s a bit of advice though: it matters, and they are judging. While an individual might be okay with their friend’s lack of proper grammar usage and frequent use of emoji’s and acronyms, your clients and business partners care.
Not only that but you can’t just expect good grammar and punctuation to be enough. No. People want MORE! But know what they want and how they want it is the real trick.
When being persuasive or charming, it’s all about what you are communicating as well as the way you are doing it. So you have the proper speech form down, but what about the content. You have to know your audience and give them what they want to hear and know how to say it.
So without further ramblings, here are tips about writing on social media:
- Check your grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc,.
- Word your message correctly to fit your audience. Think what will appeal to them. What phrases? What words? Use industry language only if it’s to a niche audience.
- Keep it short and sweet.
- Hashtags are for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram only, but limit their use.
- Emoji’s are cute and all, but keep it down to one sporadic emoji per every few posts.
- Pictures and words together are much more effective than not. When the picture is relevant to the message you’ve got it made.
- Again, remember your audience. Information is important but so is having fun. Posting appropriate funny memes or articles is good. You want people to laugh and share. Think to yourself “Would I like or share ?” and then “Is my audience someone who would like or share this?” If you answered yes to both questions, then do it.
- If at any time you question whether
whatever you have is appropriate, then it’s most likely not.
- Keep a consistent voice! What does that mean? Always use these tips when posting for one. Don’t change your attitude or messages on your audience. People will grow familiar to your brand and will like it for what is is. You change your voice; your audience won’t like it.
- Lastly, be creative! Think outside the box! Don’t just post what your competitors are posting. Go the extra mile. Use your own original content. Write blogs. Take pictures. Make it yours and make it good!
